Natasha Washington
ADVOCATE – Card #1
You expect the advocate to support you only if you leave Curtis once and for all. But she isn’t like that at all. She tells you that her only agenda is that you stay safe.
The advocate suggests that you call the police if Curtis becomes violent again. You tell her that you don’t trust the police. She continues talking about the police response and protocol.
“I don’t mean to offend you,” you tell her, “but in my experience the police act a whole lot better if you’re white. The police have stopped Curtis three times on his way to his own office after hours. My brother’s been arrested three times and he has yet to commit a crime.”
You’ve made your point and the advocate apologizes and talks about other ways to make a safety plan.
