At first you don’t remember how you got to the hospital. Your mother and your best friend Caroline are holding your hands. “He’s in jail, baby,” your mother tells you. “but only for the next couple of days.”

The doctor comes in and details your damage: broken nose, cheekbone and ribs. Dislocated jaw and severe concussion. He estimates that you’ll be out of work for two months at least.

A few days later you call your law firm. They hint that you might not be cut out for life at the firm and they would have to discuss your status further when you are strong enough to return to work.
